Doloris Pederson Paints the Wetlands

A special exhibit featuring a selection of the

artist's depictions of the Kansas wetlands.

Doloris' interest in the wetlands dates back to 1995 when she spent a week painting the Bird Sanctuary with fellow members of The California Art Club as part of Carmel-by-the-Sea, a Plein Air Event. She subsequently painted at the Carpinteria California Salt Marsh Bird Sanctuary near her home.

Returning to her native Kansas in 2005 after 35 years in Southern California, Doloris found a wealth of inspiration in Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area and Quivera National Wildlife Refuge.

In Doloris' own words:

"Now changing season, diverse species of plants and animals, migrating birds, spectacular sunrises and sunsets and the prairie give a familiar voice to my expression."

"The benefit of painting on location is you get the atmospheric impact.  You can hear the birds, you can hear the sounds of nature.  What an incredible opportunity it is to paint not only the landscape and the reflection of the atmosphere on the water, but also to paint the birds and the spirit of the birds.  It is incredible freedom that they have, combined with the unity they possess in flight and when they mingle with one another."

"Solitude and the familiar are two essential ingredients for my expression."
